The company, located in New York City, was founded in 1872 by W.J. Tingue and Charles W. House. They were importers and suppliers of mohair, genapppe, worsted, cotton and spun silk yarns and noils for cassimeres, coatings, dress goods, flannels, etc. They also imported camel's hair noils. By 1876 the company had acquired the Hawthorne Mill in Glenville, Conn.; this mill manufactured felt and felting, especially for mechanical purposes. The Hawthorne Mill was incorporated in 1892 with W.J. Tinge as president and C.W. House as vice president. It became part of the American Felt Co. in 1900.
