USS Raleigh, a cruiser, was commissioned in 1894. She took part in the Spanish American War bombarding Spanish forts in the Philippines. She remained on the Asiatic Station from 1903 to 1907 until she was decommissioned that year. During World War I, she patrolled the east coast of the United States, Brazil and the Caribbean. In 1919, she was decommissioned for the second and last time.
