Floyd Woodrow Cardwell was born in Newport News, Va., in November 1912, the son of Franklin Henry Cardwell and Olive (Nichols) Cardwell. He attended school in Newport News and Richmond, where the family moved in the 1920s, and was living in Richmond when he joined the United States Navy in 1943. He served in the 92nd Construction Battalion in the South Pacific Theater, and after the war worked for a time for the Department of Corrections of the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was married twice: to Ruby Marks and to Sarah Louise Rose-Hayes.
