Stuart Forth was born in Manistee, Michigan. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in library science degrees from the University of Michigan in 1949 and 1950, respectively. In 1962, he was awarded a Ph.D. in American History by the University of Washington. He was deeply involved the development of a sophisticated Library Information Access System (LIAS) to link the library to all Pennsylvania State University campuses as well as the public. Pennsylvania State University was an early adopter of a computerized library access system which phased out card catalogs. He served as president of the Pennsylvania Library Association in 1979 and 1980 and retired 30 September 1988.
