Thomas Godfrey Lowenstein was born in England on August 15, 1941. He attended Cambridge University (M.A., 1965) and the Leicester University School of Education (Cert. Ed., 1966). Lowenstein both studied and wrote poetry and briefly served as an editor of Granta, an English literary quarterly. Among his research interests were Imagist and modern poetry and Eskimo culture.

Lowenstein was an instructor in English at Northwestern University during the period 1971-1974. His teaching centered on English and American literature, modern poetry, and narrative composition.
