Born and raised in Duxbury, Mass., Cushman was the daughter of Lucy Hall and Walter Fosdick Cushman and the granddaughter of Mary Winsor Alden Cushman and sea captain David Cushman, Jr. After earning a diploma from a three-year program in the Department of Household Arts at State Normal School in Framingham (1918), she returned to be one of the first women to receive a bachelor's degree in education (1922). An instructor at Miss Farmer's School of Cookery (1927-45) in Boston, Cushman also taught at the New England School of Home Arts, the Household Nursing Association, and Framingham State College. After her retirement in 1960, Cushman traveled extensively, going to many of the ports visited by her grandfather. Active with the Alden Kindred and the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society, she bequeathed her land and house and its contents to the Plymouth County Wildlands Trust.
