Esther Eliza Smith Wolfe was born in Northport, Mich., July 16,1857, the daughter of Payson and Mary Jane (Smith) Wolfe. Her maternal grandfather was George Nelson Smith, missionary to the Native Americans of the Grand Traverse region. On Jan. 29,1881, she married Wesley T. Wilson. Her sister, Stella M. Champney, was a Detroit newspaper woman and writer. Before 1900, when she came to Detroit, Mrs. Wilson was on the staff of the Grand Rapids Herald. In 1904 she joined the Detroit Sunday News-Tribune. She wrote under the name of Etta S. Wilson. She was a member of the D.A.R.; and was interested in reforestation and ornithology. She died, Jan. 6, 1936.
