Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Darley distinguished himself as an illustrator. In 1848, he moved to New York and became successful illustrating the works of Irving and Cooper. After his marriage in 1859, he and his wife moved to Claymont, Delaware.

Felix Octavius Carr Darley was born in Philadelphia, and his first drawings were published in 1842. He had an exceptional career as an artist and illustrator, contributing to Harper's and other periodicals, publishing books of his drawings, designing bank plates, and illustrating many of the most popular books of the day, including works by Irving, Cooper, Longfellow, Dickens, Hawthorne, and Poe. He was considered one of the best and a popular illustrator of his time.
