William H. Allison joined the theatre faculty in 1961 and was named head of the Department of Theatre Arts in 1967. He later served as assistant dean of the College of Arts and Architecture and associate director of the Institute for the Arts and Humanistic Studies (now Institute for the Arts and Humanities), and retired in 1988. He played a key role in the development of three major performing arts venues at Penn State: The Pavilion, the Playhouse Theatres, and the Milton S. Eisenhower Auditorium, which opened in 1974. In 1969, he was named membership chairman of the then new Theatre Association of Pennsylvania.
