Chih-Chun Hsiao was born in Bejing, China and attended Yenching University, Tsinghua University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His B.S., M.S. and Ph.D degrees were in mechanical engineering, physics and applied mechanics. His first teaching position was at Pennsylvania State University; he came to the University of Minnesota in 1955. His research has focused on mechanics and polymeric systems and he has published more than one hundred articles and other publications. He received numerous research awards from federal agencies and throughout his career has advised and consulted with industrial, legal and technology firms. He formally retired from the University in 1990.
