Hide Profile

The Faculty Planning Committee was created in 1962. The Committee was charged with providing guidance concerning the long-range physical and intellectual development of the University. It was requested to make specific recommendations on how to balance the demands of competing intellectual disciplines for space. It was to formulate educational objectives; develop plans for their realization; delineate resources necessary for implementation of the plans; and project the long-range requirements necessary to achieve these goals in the form of a comprehensive educational plan.

Reports issued by the Faculty Planning Committee are reviewed by the Faculty Educational Policies Committee and the Provost before being submitted to the President. The FPC plays no role in implementing any of its recommendations that ultimately are accepted by the administration.

Clarence Ver Steeg (1962-1965), Ali Bulent Cambell (1965-1966), Jean Hagstrum (1966-1969), David Mintzer (1969-1970), David Reiter (1970-1972), James Sheehan (1972-1973), Daniel Zelinsky (1973-1975), Hugo Sonnenschein (1975-1976), Paul Loach (1976-1978), David Baron (1978-1980), and Robert Lineberry (1980- ) have chaired the Faculty Planning Committee. Major reports were produced during the Ver Steeg (physical plant), Hagstrum (undergraduate curriculum), Zelinsky (graduate program), Sonnenschein (multidegree programs), Loach (funding of research), and Baron (the University in the 1980s) tenures.
