Keck's father moved his family from Pennsylvania to Iowa in 1846, settling near Utica in Van Buren County. In the spring of 1850 Keck and one of his brothers traveled to California to participate in the gold rush. He returned to Iowa in 1852 and married Ingaba Ebert. After returning to Iowa he took up farming in Cedar Township, Van Buren County.
