Christina McNaughton Graham was born in Larbert, Stirlingshire, on 11 October 1928 . Her father, Alexander Graham, was employed by 1952 as a gamekeeper at Dumfries House, Cumnock, Ayrshire, on the estate established for the 4th Earl of Dumfries, William Dalrymple. She attended Deanston Public School in Perthshire, then Cumnock Academy. She attended non-graduating classes for law agents in the Faculty of Law at the University of Glasgow between 1952 and 1954. She studied Scots Law, achieving a certificate of distinction, and Conveyancing, Evidence and Procedure in which she gained a certificate of merit.
