Ralph Atlas was a native of Poland who emigrated to Palestine with his familly. He received an engineering degree from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1936 and returned to Palestine to work with the Haganah. He served with the British Army during World War II. He was a professional engineer in Pittsburgh after the war. He later earned a Master's degree in Russian philology from the University of Pittsburgh and translated technical documents. He traveled to Israel and spoke in Pittsburgh on issues related to Israel. His second wife Paula Skirble Atlas served as efxecutinve assistant to the Three Rivers Arts Festival.
