Minister and bookseller; born in Erie County, Pennsylvania; apprenticed as a tailor; supported himself while in college and seminary by selling books and writing for newspapers; graduated from Rutgers College, 1842, and from New Brunswick Theological Seminary, 1845; served churches in New York, New Jersey (at Jersey City ? returned with his family from Illinois to New Jersey in 1876, residing first at Belleville and later at Nutley; conducted a bookstore in New York City for many years after his retirement from the active ministry.
