Painter, U.S. Army officer, and state employee; b. in Pennsylvania; as an adult, lived in Fairfield, Somerset County, Me.; served with 7th and 1st Maine Volunteers during the Civil War at Antietam, Gettysburg, and other battles; after the war, given various state commissions; appointed coroner in 1879 and aide-de-camp to Gov. James D. Lamson in 1880.
