Hoch, J. Hampton (John Hampton), 1904-1976
Variant namesJ. Hampton Hoch was born in Philadelphia on September 20, 1904 to Quintus and Irene E. Buss Hoch. He was graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, from which he later earned his Masters of Science and Doctor of Science degrees. He came to the Medical College of the State of South Carolina in 1927, rising through the ranks to the level of full professor in 1937. Dr. Hoch served in World War II in the United States Air Force from which he retired as a Lt. Colonel. Dr. Hoch was a founding member of the Charleston Chapter of the American Pharmaceutical Association. A prolific writer on the topics of pharmacy history, he served on the editorial boards of several publications. Upon his retirement from MUSC in 1971 he was named Professor Emeritus of Biology and Pharmacognosy. He died on May 26, 1976.
