James Jefferson Johnson, Jr., born in Sweetwater, Texas. Received a Bachelor of Art and Education at West Texas State University, where he met his wife, Dr. Mary Lynn Johnson. He received a Master's Degree at University of Texas, El Paso, and a Ph.D. in Art Education from Pennsylvania State University. He joined the art faculty at North Texas State University (later the University of North Texas) in 1968, where he taught until 1995. He has been a active member of the Denton Community Theater, the North Texas Area Art League, the Greater Denton Arts Council, the Denton Historical Commission, and the Texas Society Sons of the American Revolution.
