George Westerfield attended Mississippi State Teachers College (now, University of Southern Mississippi) in the 1930s and played football and basketball. After teaching and coaching in Wiggins, Mississippi for four years, he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. He served in Europe until December 1945, when he returned to Mississippi briefly before moving to Tennessee. In Tennessee, he opened a grocery store on the square and became involved in local and state politics.
