Caldwell Delaney was born in 1918 in Danville, Virginia. His family moved to Mobile, Alabama, in 1930. Delaney received a B.S. degree in 1941 from Spring Hill College and an M.A. degree from the University of Alabama in 1952. During his career Delaney acted as Dean of the University Military School (1941-1956), Headmaster of Julius T. Wright School for Girls (1956-65), and Director of the Museum of Mobile (1965-92). Delaney received numerous awards and served as an officer and member of many historical organizations, including a stint as president of the Alabama Historical Association. He was named as one of Mobile's forty outstanding citizens in 1952. His published works include Deep South (1942); Remember Mobile (1948); The Story of Mobile (1953); Madame Octavia Levert, The Souths Most Famous Belle (1961); Mary McNeil Fenollosa, An Alabama Woman of Letters (1963); The Phoenix Volunteer Fire Company of Mobile, 1838-1888 (1967); and Craighead's Mobile (1969). In July 1960 Delaney married Lois Jean Fitzsimmons. Lois Delaney was a long-time teacher of English and Drama at Murphy High School.
