Samuel Hervey Laughlin, editor, legislator, and politician, was born in Washington County, Virginia, 1 May 1796, and died in Washington, D.C., 5 May, 1850.

He practiced law in Murfreesboro, Tennessee (1815); was elected attorney general (1817); became a state senator (1838); twice editor of the NASHVILLE UNION (1835-1837; 1844-?); involved in Democratic politics as a member of the "Immortal Thirteen" and as a presidential elector to the 1840 national convention; appointed President James K. Polk's Recorder in the Grand Land office (1845).
