Dixie, Florence, Lady, 1855-1905
Variant namesAuthor, adventuress, and activist, Lady Florence Dixie was born into wealth and privilege, but childhood tragedies guided her toward a less conventional, iconoclastic life. She traveled extensively, and published travel writings and novels as well as contributing to periodicals. She directed her modest literary gifts in support of women and animal rights, and for oppressed peoples in South Africa and Ireland.
