Abbie Cromer was born in 1886 in Greenfield, Indiana of Quaker parentage. Mrs. Cromer taught German and French in high schools in Indiana and worked for ten months in France after World War I under the French Service Commission. A graduate of Earlham College with an MA from Pennsylvania State University, she lived in State College from 1920 to 1963. In 1920 she married Clinton Otis Cromer who for many years was professor of farm crops at the University. Abbie H. Cromer was appointed a library assistant in 1945. The archival collection was a part-time project of the library staff until she was appointed as the first curator of the Penn State Room in 1946. She worked extensively in building the Penn State Collection, gathering source materials and writing particularly about the university's founders and campus landmarks. Abbie Cromer died February 10, 1972 at the age of 85.
