William Bloor established the first white dinnerware potteries in Trenton, New Jersey (1856), and East Liverpool, Ohio (1861). A skilled English potter, Bloor manufactured parian and a "double thick" hotel china. Bloor produced the first whiteware porcelains in East Liverpool.

Ulysses Simpson Grant (1822-1885) was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1843. He served in the army until 1854, and then re-joined in 1861, eventually rising to the position of supreme commander of all Union forces. After the end of the Civil War, Grant was appointed General of the Army. In 1868, the Republican Party selected Grant as its presidential candidate and he won the election later that year. After serving two terms as president, Grant was reappointed by Congress to serve as General of the Army. He retired to New York and died of throat cancer in 1885.
