Dr. Henderson held degrees in medicine from the universities of Glasgow and Oxford and also did graduate work at Yale and Tulane. During the 1930s, he served with a number of scientific expeditions to the Malay Archipelago, China, India, Central Africa, the amazon and the Galapagos islands. He became executive director of the American Geriatrics Society in 1962, also serving as editor-in-chief of the society's Journal. He was the author of numerous scientific articles and papers and was also member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Tropical Medicine, the Endocrine Society and the Gerontological Society. The AGS Awards Program program includes the Edward Henderson Award and State-of-the-Art Lecture as well as the Edward Henderson Student Award.
