Lyon, Shorb and Company traces its origins to a partnership between Robert T. Stewart and John Lyon. These men built an iron forge on the Juniata River in Centre County in 1813 and an iron fabrication mill in Pittsburgh in 1825. The Pittsburgh mill was called the Sligo Works and was located on the south side of the Monongahela River (on the site of the present Station Square). All of the iron used at Sligo was brought from Juniata in large blocks called blooms that were immediately ready for rolling. In 1828, Mr. Stewart sold his interests in the company and Anthony Shorb joined the company in 1831 to form the Lyon, Shorb and Company. Little is known of the details of the compnay but occasional advertisements in trade journals and city directories indicate as many as 250 men worked in the mill. The company continued to exist following the sale to Phillips, Mimick and Company in 1873. An office for the company is listed in the city directories well into the 1880's.
