The Department of Hospitals traces its origins to the establishment of the Board of Trustees of Bellevue and Allied Hospitals in 1901, when the hospital-oriented agencies of the Department of Charities were transferred to this new department. In 1909 the Board of Ambulance Service was created and in 1929 combined with the Board of Trustees of Bellevue and Allied Hospitals to form the Department of Hospitals. All remaining hospitals and hospital-related activities of the Department of Health and the Department of Public Welfare were also transferred to the new department in 1929.
