Dexter F. Arnold was drafted and entered the Army on 1 November 1943 at Manchester, VT. He took infantry basic training at Camp Blanding, FL. He went overseas on the USS General Mann where his company was assigned to Military Police duty for the voyage. He landed in Tunisia on 4 May 1944 as a replacement and underwent further training before sailing on the British transport, Strathhaven to Naples and the replacement center near Caserta. On 31 May 1944, he was trucked to Salerno and boarded landing crafts for the trip to Anzio. He was then assigned to 1st Armored Division, 6th Infantry (Armored) Regiment, A Company. In late July 1944, the armored division reorganization put him in the 6th Armored Infantry Battalion, A Company. He was diagnosed with hepatitis acute with jaundice and sent to the 12th General Hospital in Leghorn for three months before returning to his unit. He was on occupation duty in Bavaria until late summer 1944 when he returned to the United States on the USS Blue Ridge Victory.
