Herbert Osborn, the subject of the letter, was an economic entomologist, chairman of the Dept. of Zoology and Entomology at Ohio State University, 1898-1916.

Osborn's research interests were largely concerned with the taxonomy and biology of the Hemiptera, Anoplura and Thysanoptera. He revised numerous genera and described many new species of Cicadellidae, and was author or coauthor of more than 500 publications. He was a charter member, 10th president (1898) and one of the organizers of the American Association of Economic Entomologists, and a member of many other entomological associations.
