General James McEnery Huey was born and reared in Ruston, La., and graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La., in 1896. He served in the Army as a first lieutenant during the Spanish-American War then enlisted in the Marine Corps as a second lieutenant in 1899. He served in the Marine Corps until his retirement in 1930 but was called back to active duty during World War II to serve as commander of the Territorial Guard in the Hawaiian Islands.
