Joseph Raleigh was born in 1803 in Skipton, Yorkshire and became a cotton manufacturer in Manchester. In 1843 he emigrated to Mebourne with his wife Priscilla (Thorp) and three children. He became a general merchant and also established a small shipping line, a tallow factory, dealt in grazing properties and town land and had an interest in gold mining. He died at his home Maribrynong House (also known as Mona Vale), Mooee Ponds, Melbourne, in 1852.
