Duvall joined the U.S. Navy circa 1842 and by 1869 had achieved the rank of Commander where he served as Surgeon at Norfolk naval hospital. From 1867-1869 he served on the ship and was indirectly involved in the 1869 imprisonment in of Porter C. Bliss and George F. Masterman in Paraguay.
