Manigault, Joseph, 1763-1843
Variant namesSouth Carolina planter and legislator. Son of Peter Manigault (1731-1773), he owned extensive properties including plantations in Georgetown District, Christ Church Parish, and St. James Goose Creek Parish, as well as a mansion on Meeting St. in Charleston, S.C. He entertained George Washington at his Awendaw residence in 1791. Joseph Manigault and his second wife Charlotte Drayton were the parents of Joseph (1801-1829), Anne (who married Rev. Thomas House Taylor), twins Peter (1805-1864) and Charles Drayton (1805-1838), Gabriel (1809-1888), Henry Middleton (1811-1883), Edward (1817-1874), and Arthur Middleton (1824-1886).
