Ruth Foxx Newborg, a 1940 graduate of the University of Louisville, served as program director of University of Kentucky sponsored radio station WBKY in Beattyville, Ky. from 1940 to 1941. The station was operated by U.K. in cooperation with the Lee County, Ky. board of education. The station was created as an experiment in bringing educational radio broadcast to the remote Appalachian regions of eastern Kentucky. The venture was short lived due to limited technology and the mountainous terrain.
