Tennessee. National Guard
An organized military presence has existed in Tennessee since 1774 when militias were formed in the areas of Sullivan and Carter Counties to face a perceived threat from the Shawnee Indians, eventually fighting a decisive battle at Point Pleasant (Kenawa). In 1780 John Sevier and Isaac Shelby led Tennessee troops in another decisive battle against the British at King's Mountain, winning what was considered to be the turning point of the Revolutionary War in southern states. An act of the 45th General Assembly in 1887 created the organization known as the Tennessee National Guard. The Tennessee Army National Guard has participated in every principal war in which America has been engaged. It has also been instrumental in disaster recovery in the state and south eastern United States. Currently the Army National Guard, Air National Guard, and TN Emergency Management Agency all fall under the Department of the Military, which is headed by the Adjutant General.
