Edward Knoblock was born in New York, part of a wealthy and aristocratic family. In his youth he wrote plays, and was encouraged to become a dramatist. After graduating from Harvard, he lived in New York, Paris, and London, trying to write a successful play. He became a prolific and popular playwright, often in collaboration with another author or adapting an existing story. His most popular and enduring work was Kismet, a light, exotic, colorful play that anticipated the success of musical comedies. He also wrote several novels and a few screenplays.
