John Breazeale was born in Brandon, Mississippi on January 1, 1926. He earned a B.S. from Millsaps College in 1947. and a M.S. degree from the University of Alabama in 1951. Breazeale was a National Science Foundation fellow and earned his Ph. D. in physics from the University of Virginia in 1955. Breazeale was a faculty member at Hinds Junior College (1948-50), and the Virginia Military Institute (1951-1953).
Breazeale worked at the Bill Jack Scientific Instrument Company as senior physicist from 1955-1958, and at the University of Virginia from 1958-1959. He was appointed an Associate Professor of physics at Wichita State University in 1959. Breazeale served as Professor and Head of the Physics Department from 1961-1967 and as Dean of the Graduate School from 1967-1969. Breazeale was appointed Vice-President for Academic Affairs in 1969 and continued in this position until 1986.
