Dr. James Sharbrough Ferguson (1916-1984) of Anguilla, Mississippi, served as dean of the graduate school, professor of history, and from 1967 to 1979 chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. From 1964 to 1967 Ferguson was the university's acting chancellor while Chancellor Otis A. Singletary took two leaves of absence to be the director of the Job Corps.
