Elizabeth Gamble Miller received her bachelor's degree from Texas Christian University in 1946 and her master's degree in Spanish in 1965 from Southern Methodist University. A charter member of the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA), Miller received her doctorate in Comparative Literature and Aesthetics in 1981 from The University of Texas at Dallas. She served as a part- or full-time instructor at SMU for three separate periods: from 1947 to 1949, from 1957 to 1960, and from 1962 to 1972. In 1972, Miller became an assistant professor of Spanish, and advanced to associate professor in 1984. She retired in August of 2002. For twenty-three years (1983-2006) she served as an editor for the ALTA Newsletter, which boasts a circulation of over one thousand. She translated many poems from Spanish into English, and worked as a consultant in her spare time.
