Mary Alice Tennent (1890-1971) of Asheville, North Carolina, attended the North Carolina State Normal and Industrial College (now UNCG) from 1909-1913. While a student, Mary was a member of the Y.W.C.A., Athletic Association, Hockey Team (1911), and Basketball Team (1910). She executed the duties of the Vice-President of the the Athletic Association (1912), Secretary of the Class (1910), Secretary of the Students' Council (1910-1911), and Assistant Business Manager of the State Normal Magazine (1911-1912). Mary graduated in 1913 with a Bachelor of Pedagogy. After graduation, Mary worked as the Assistant Registrar at the North Carolina State Normal and Industrial College until 1956. She also wrote a history of her family entitled, Light in Darkness: the Story of William Tennent, Sr. and the Log College. In 1971, the same year that her book was published, Mary Tennent died at the age of 81 from injuries sustained when she was struck on the head by a would be purse-snatcher.
