William Hickling Prescott was a noted American scholar and gentleman historian. Born in an aristocratic Boston family, Prescott graduated from Harvard and may have become a lawyer but for a strange accident that deprived him of sight in his left eye. Health concerns prompted him to lead a remarkably regular life in pursuit of literature. A colleague sparked interest in Spain, and Prescott is acknowledged as the first American historian to treat Spain and Latin America seriously.
