Born to immigrant parents on 6 September 1908 in Emerado, North Dakota, Dorothy Crosby attended primary school in Pleasant View Township, Grand Forks County, and Central High School in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Attending College during the Depression, Crosby earned her B.S. from Mayville State Teachers College. Following college, Crosby lived in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York, where she met her future husband, L.O. Crosby, Jr. The two married in Emerado, North Dakota, 1935. Following marriage, the couple lived in Crosby, Mississippi, 1935-1941, and Picayune, Mississippi, 1941-1970. Dorothy Hastert Crosby passed away in 2006. Crosby's generous donations allowed the restoration of Rowan Oak, William Faulkner's Oxford, Mississippi home.
