Miriam Cohen was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1926. She wasn't interested in education, but after her first child was born she discovered her interest in and talent for writing children's books. Her first book, Will I Have a Friend?, illustrated by Lillian Hoban, was published in 1967. It was the first of many books about Jim and Paul in Cohen's and Hoban's series, "First-Grade Friends."
