South Dakota. Governor (1893-1897 : Charles H. Sheldon)
Born September 12, 1840 in Lamoille County, Vermont. Died October 20, 1898 in Deadwood, South Dakota. During first term as governor argued for thrift in funding public institutions, and dealt with financial problems as tax collections did not meet the States' needs. The defalcation of the state treasurer necessitated straigtening out the states' finances during his second term. Felt that the governor should be more than a mere figurehead.
