Samuel Maxwell Gayley (1802-1862) came to America from Ireland in 1823; licensed by the Reformed Presbytery of Philadelphia; left the Reformed Church in 1833, becoming a member of New Castle Presbytery and accepting a call to Rockland Presbyterian Church, near Wilmington, DE. In addition to his pastoral duties, Gayley served as principal of the Wilmington Classical Institute.

Samuel Rankin Gayley (1828-1862) was also born in Ireland; joined his uncle in Wilmington, accepting a teaching position at the Classical Institute ca. 1847; Presbyterian missionary to China, 1856-1862.
