Rufus Pettit had a farm in Baldwinsville, New York at the outbreak of the Civil War. In 1861, he and a group of other volunteers formed the "Cold Springs Rifle Company", later known as "Pettit's Battery," and the company and its captain won a great reputation for bravery and valor on the battlefields of Fredericksburg, Antietam and Chancellorsville.

Pettit was wounded at Chancellorsville and later contracted dysentery and was forced to resign his commission. After his recovery, he served in the Veteran Reserve Corps as one of the officers in charge of military prisons in Alexandria, Virginia. He also served in the Mexican American War. After the Civil War, he became a lawyer, and lived in Baldwinsville until his death in 1891.
