Biographical/Historical Sketch

Rupert Miller taught at Stanford University from 1959 until his death in 1986; he held a joint appointment between the Department of Statistics and the School of Medicine (Division of Biostatistics), where he served as a consultant to researchers on data analysis. He was chair of the statistics department from 1969-1972 and received one of the first dean's awards for superior teaching in 1977.

Miller earned his B.A. in mathematics at Princeton in 1954 and his doctorate in statistics at Stanford in 1958. He taught at Johns Hopkins in 1963-1964, was a Guggenheim fellow in 1972-1973, and served as editor of the Annals of Statistics. His books include Survival Analysis, Simultaneous Statistical Inference, and Beyond ANOVA, Basics of Applied Statistics .
