Ely, an accountant by profession, was born in LaPointe, Wisconsin on May 22, 1847, the son of Edmund F. and Catherine (Goulais) Ely. After his father ended his work as a missionary, the family moved to Duluth (1854), becoming pioneer settlers of the town. He served as assistant postmaster of Duluth (1872-1875), lived in St. Paul and Florida (1875-1894), and then returned to Duluth where he died November 23, 1908.
