Malthus A. Ward was born in New Hampshire. Trained in medicine, he practiced in Hindustan, Ind. from 1819 to 1823. He returned to school to take his M.D. degree and practiced in Salem, Mass. In 1831 he became a professor of natural history at the University of Georgia.
