Kunze, John C. (John Christopher), 1744-1807
Variant namesJohn C. Kunze was born in Saxony at Artern on the Unstrut and graduated from the University of Leipzig in 1763. He came to America in 1770 to assume a pastorate in Philadelphia, Pa. under the tutelage of Henry Melchoir Muhlenberg, the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America. In 1784, Kunze moved to New York City and served as pastor of Christ Church, located at the corner of William and Frankfort streets. From 1784 until 1787 and again from 1797 until 1799, he taught oriental languages at Columbia College. Kunze was the author of many books on religion and was well versed in astrology, astronomy, numismatics, and languages. Kunze married Margaretta Henrietta Muhlenberg, the daughter of his mentor, and was active in New York society.
